Universal Monsters Steelbooks
As Universal kicks off the Dark Universe — their planned cinematic universe to be populated by reboots of iconic Universal monster movies The Mummy, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, Dracula, and more — the studio isn’t forgetting about the old blood. Last October, we learned longtime comic book artist Alex Ross — best known for seminal Marvel and DC works like “Marvels” and “Kingdom Come” — created a series of Universal Monsters prints to be sold at San Diego Comic Con. The full set includes: (Boris Karloff) Frankenstein – 1931; (Bela Lugosi) Dracula – 1931; (Elsa Lanchester) Bride of Frankenstein – 1935; Creature from the Black Lagoon – 1954; (Boris Karloff) The Mummy – 1932; (Lon Chaney Jr) The Wolf Man – 1941; and (Claude Rains) The Invisible Man – 1933.
If you can’t get your hands on the prints, don’t be afraid: Universal is turning them into gorgeous Blu-ray steelbooks.
The steelbooks are currently only available for pre-order over on Amazon Germany, and are listed as being Region B2 Blu-rays (meaning the discs may not play outside of Europe, Africa, Oceania, Middle East, French territories, and Greenland). Hopefully the set makes its way to the U.S., but in the meantime, you can pre-order Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolfman, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The steelbooks release September 14th.
Universal’s reboot of The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, kicks off the Dark Universe and is now playing.
