“The Walking Dead” Season 5, Episode 9, “What Happened and What’s Going On” Review

“The Walking Dead” returned after what seemed like a never-ending mid-season hiatus. When we last saw the group they were leaving the hospital with a now deceased Beth in their arms. It’s obvious that this group has been through nothing short of complete and utter Hell; ever since Rick woke up from the coma four years ago. We’ve lost a lot of memorable characters, but Beth somehow managed to be one of the most significant; Both in terms of representing youth and innocence, and just being one of the more pure characters on the show. It’s hard to think anyone would dislike her.

My expectations for “What Happened and What’s Going On” were somewhere along the lines of seeing a lot of tears from Maggie, and mainly just seeing what usually happens after a member of the group dies – Rick figuring out what the next game plan is, and everyone else mourns. Though, that’s not quite the case with this episode. In fact, it’s actually a way ballsier turn of events and change of the usual narrative. This proves that season five is only getting progressively more fresh in content and better in quality. “What Happened and What’s Going On,” is a damn’ good peek into where we’re going with the remaining 7 episodes.
One of the coolest aspects of this episode is, of course, the way it is edited and paced. It’s told in a traditional narrative, but as a certain character goes through more and more danger as the episode draws to a close – we begin to see flashbacks and visions of late characters such as Bob, The Governor, and even Beth already. This adds for not only a fairly emotional episode, reeling after the death of Beth, but one that reminds us of everyone who has died on the show thus far. As well as showing how fragile all of the characters are.
On a show like “The Walking Dead” it’s always great to show that the characters are anything but immune to death, but this episode really showed how bad the deaths can be. It showed how the characters are far from invincible, but quite weak and powerless in the grand scheme of things. It’s the type of storytelling that got me hooked on the show in the first place. Obviously, there’s another death in this episode that caught me off guard and I won’t spoil it, just in case there are any readers who are yet to watch the episode.
With that being said, I can usually predict each death about an episode in advance. I didn’t quite think Beth would last much longer, but I didn’t quite see it coming as soon as it did. As for the certain character that died tonight, I certainly didn’t expect them to die; let alone anyone from the group die this close to Beth. Though, I think the meaning behind it was overwhelmingly powerful and the show put it to an excellent use. I’m so excited to see where the final 7 episodes go. This is a foot in the right direction. 4.5/5.
