THE LION KING: Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen “In Talks” to Star as Timon and Pumbaa
Disney may have found its Timon and Pumbaa, the meerkat and warthog duo who introduce Simba to the ways of “Hakuna Matata,” for their live-action re-imagining of The Lion King.
Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, Parks and Recreation) and Seth Rogen (Superbad, This is The End) are in talks to play Timon and Pumbaa, respectively, roles occupied by Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella in the 1994 animated original. Donald Glover has been cast as Simba, with James Earl Jones reprising his role as Simba’s father, Mufasa, the doomed king of the Pride Lands. Disney is reportedly eyeing superstar singer Beyonce for the role of Nala.
Disney announced the project last September, setting Iron Man and The Jungle Book filmmaker Jon Favreau to direct. Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script, with Favreau and Jeffrey Silver (TRON: Legacy, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast) producing. The Lion King opens July 19, 2019.
