SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel and Two Spinoffs in the Works
Suicide Squad, the third installment in Warner Brothers’ DC Cinematic Universe, is one of the biggest hits of the year. The David Ayer-directed film hit 4K, Blu-ray and DVD today, and the studio took the opportunity to announce two spinoffs: one starring the never-misses Deadshot (Will Smith) and another, Gotham City Sirens, featuring Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). A Suicide Squad sequel is in development, and will presumably re-team Smith and Robbie with many of their squad.
Suicide Squad director David Ayer will direct Gotham City Sirens with Robbie serving as star and executive producer, reports THR. The film is based on a recent comic book series that highlighted Batman’s female villains, including Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy. Ahead of Suicide Squad‘s release, it was revealed a Harley Quinn spinoff was in the works with the Birds of Prey, a female team of superheroines that includes Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl, and Black Canary, a Justice League member and sometimes lover of the Green Arrow. Geneva Robertson-Dworet (the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, Sherlock Holmes 3) will script. It’s currently unknown if Sirens will still feature the good girls or focus only on the bad girls of Gotham, but Warners is fast tracking the project with Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, head of DC Films, involved in producorial roles.
Ayer teased Suicide Squad 2 in August, days after Suicide Squad‘s big box office opening, but it’s unclear if the End of Watch and Fury filmmaker will try for a second take on the worst heroes ever. Warners is also said to be “looking into” a spinoff featuring Will Smith’s Deadshot, who was at one time rumored to be part of Ben Affleck’s upcoming Batman film. Despite its production troubles – Ayer reportedly only had six weeks to write the script – Suicide Squad grossed $745.6 million worldwide, in spite of largely negative reviews. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Sirens has yet to set a release date, but a fast tracked production likely means a possible 2018 or 2019 debut. Suicide Squad is now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.
