Spike Lee and Jordan Peele Set to Make KKK Thriller
When you hear Spike Lee and Jordan Peele are making a new movie together, you listen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two acclaimed filmmakers are prepping a new thriller based around Black Klansman allegedly starring Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington. It will be directed by Lee and produced by Peele with Focus Features picking up distribution of the film.
Black Klansman is the story of Ron Stallworth. Ron was a detective in Colorado in late 1970’s who answered an ad in the newspaper for new members of the Klu Klux Klan. Manipulating them in the shadows, Stallworth was able to become head of the local chapter of the KKK by using phone calls and having a Caucasian friend pose as him during meetings. By cleverly exploiting the Klan, he was able to sabotage cross-burnings and destroy them from the inside. Pretty badass if you ask me.
Adapting Black Klansman, of course, requires quite a writing team. Spike Lee, Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, and Kevin Willmont. It has also been reported that Lee and Peele have been quietly developing the movie for two years, so expect to see a fantastic final product. While the film is quite topical, it seems fitting that the two filmmakers are planning a socio-political thriller to show an interesting part of American history that seems to relevant to today’s social issues.
