Simon Kinberg Confirmed to Direct X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX
Kinberg, longtime writer and producer on Fox’s X-Men franchise, has been officially confirmed to direct the series’ next installment, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Deadline broke the news.
Simon Kinberg, who penned the scripts for X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and X-Men: Apocalypse, will write and direct X-Men: Dark Phoenix, reuniting stars Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), and James McAvoy (Professor Xavier). Kinberg takes over from X-Men, X2, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse director Bryan Singer, who officially “passed the torch” in an Instagram post describing Dark Phoenix as an “epic story in great hands.”
Fox previously attempted adapting the famous X-Men storyline in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, directed by Brett Ratner. The film was poorly received by fans and critics alike. Kinberg has served as producer on the X-Men series since The Last Stand, also overseeing two spinoffs: R-rated smash hits Deadpool and Logan. Lawrence, Fassbender, and McAvoy rejoin co-star Nicholas Hoult (Beast), as well as Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), and Sophie Turner (Jean Grey / Phoenix), all who made their X-Men debuts in last summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Miss Sloane) is in talks to board the production as the film’s main villain, Shi’ar Empress Lilandra.
The 90s-set X-Men: Dark Phoenix opens November 2nd, 2018.
