Rumor: Tom Hardy Wanted for Villain Jafar in Disney’s Live-Action ALADDIN

A new rumor claims Tom Hardy is Aladdin director Guy Ritchie’s “favored choice” for the role of villain Jafar.

Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, The Revenant) could be menacing Agrabah, if a new rumor proves true. According to The Sun, “Guy is a huge fan of Tom’s work and securing him would be a major coup. There have been conversations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he’s certainly one of Guy’s favored choices. It just depends on schedules whether he’ll be able to sign up.”

Ritchie, who most recently directed King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, signed onto the project in October. Dan Lin, a producer on the film, promised in an interview with Collider that the film would be diverse, and accurately reflect its Middle Eastern setting:

“Look at me. (Laughs) [Lin is Taiwanese.] I mean, I’m not a typical guy. Listen, I’m very fortunate working in Hollywood; I am diverse. So when I came in to make the movie, I wanted to make a diverse version of the movie. Luckily for me Guy Ritchie has the same vision and Disney has the same vision, so we’re not here to make Prince of Persia. We want to make a movie that’s authentic to that world.”

As talented as Hardy is, his casting might cause ire to moviegoers worldwide. Most recently, Will Smith (Bad Boys, Suicide Squad) was said to be eyed for the role of the Genie, the magical blue friend portrayed by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film.

Disney’s Aladdin is one of many live-action re-imaginings planned by Disney, following the hugely successful live-action re-dos Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast, which grossed more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. The studio has — among others — Dumbo, The Lion King, Mulan, and The Little Mermaid in the pipeline.

Hardy most recently signed onto Sony Pictures’ Venom, where he’ll play famous Spider-Man foe / antihero Eddie Brock. Venom is set to hit October 2018. Disney has yet to announce a release date for Aladdin.
