“Outlander: Ep. 2” – Ref Kevin’s Review

Episode 2 of Starz stellar new series continues to flesh out the world and characters we were introduced to last week.  If you haven’t started watching this series yet, start now before you get too far behind! (Our Episode 1 review can be read HERE.)

As Claire makes the two day journey to Castle Leoch, a trip she recalls that was last made in a car, she begins to accept the reality of her situation. Mulling over history lessons from her past she begins to piece together which era she is in, and whom is at war with whom.  She believes that her historic trivia will help her blend in, but in this world she is an oddity.  Her modern behavior is a curiosity to others, and her English accent is no comfort to the Scotts. Her extensive medical knowledge also makes her suspect, prompting one character to ask “Are you a charmer?”

Arriving at Castle Leoch, Claire is introduced to Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis) Lord of the Clan MacKenzie.  Suffering from a debilitating disease, he relies on his brother Dougal (Graham McTavish) to be the enforcer of the throne.  Dougal is a harsh, fiercely motivated and cunning man.  While Claire feels compassion towards Colum, she fears Dougal, as he can obviously see through her charade.  While both brothers can tell she is hiding something from them, and is perhaps an English spy, Colum agrees to return her to her hometown within the week.

As mentioned in our Episode 1 review, this is a wonderful new series.  High production values and beauty abounds.  Even the accents are a joy to listen to, even if a bit hard to understand at times.  Starz has enough confidence in “Outlander” that season two, based on the second book “Dragonfly in Amber” has already been ordered.

Episode 2 “Castle Leoch” airs tonight, Saturday, August 16th.
