OBI-WAN Movie on the Way?
“Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm fully intend to make an Obi-Wan movie set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with Ewan McGregor in tow,” reads a supposed rumor from Star Wars News Net. It’s not much to go off of, but Disney CEO Bob Iger did say recently that Disney is “starting to talk about what could happen after Episode IX. About what could be another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories” — it’s certainly feasible that Disney and Lucasfilm would start to put serious work into that potential Obi-Wan movie that has been on the table since Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion back in 2012.
We’ve long known Disney’s intentions to produce yearly Star Wars films — they’ve even dubbed it the “forever franchise” — and Obi-Wan Kenobi is a popular and iconic character; audiences know who he is. Ewan McGregor, who portrayed a younger Obi-Wan in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, has said he’d be open to returning. You’d have to think that Disney and Lucasfilm have an Obi-Wan movie somewhere near the top of the pile of potential standalones (a young Han Solo movie is set to open May 2018).
“I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one,” McGregor told Premiere as recently as this past October. “It would be fun to film that story now I’m older,” he said. “I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them!”
McGregor most recently teamed with Disney as Lumiere for the studio’s live-action Beauty and the Beast. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the eighth episode of the Star Wars saga, opens December 15th.
