New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Images, Details
Following a first trailer in December and director James Gunn’s promise not to “give away very much” from the highly-guarded Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we know little about the upcoming Marvel Studios sequel. USA Today has released a new batch of images from the film, including a handful of small but previously unrevealed details.
“The first movie was successful because we took chances and gave people the unexpected. This movie can only really be what it is, Guardians can only be what they are, if they’re taking a risk,” shares Gunn, who returned to write and direct the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. “It means giving them a much different movie.” Gunn goes on to add bigger sci-fi concepts, new alien worlds and fresh personalities will help differentiate the sequel from its predecessor. There’s Mantis (Pom Klementieff), described as a confidant to Ego (Kurt Russell) — father of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill.
“Ego is the most powerful character I’m ever going to play,” Russell said. “I mean, he created himself! He’s the real deal.”
As for Ego’s son, the roguish space a-hole has stepped up as the true leader of his newfound family. “I don’t know if Quill is ever going to be a fully functioning, responsible adult,” Pratt warns. The site adds that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 doesn’t take place at the same time its released, like most Marvel Studios films. Instead, we catch up with the team just two months after the end of Guardians of the Galaxy – placing the film in 2014.
USA Today goes on to note that Drax (Dave Bautista) will find a friend in Mantis, while Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) will team with Yondu (Michael Rooker), the blue-skinned, mohawk-rocking space outlaw who raised Quill.
Says Zoe Saldana of green warrior Gamora, “She’s surrounded by all these dudes who are so stupid half the time. She has to be the voice of reason.” The film will also further explore the relationship between Gamora and adopted sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), whose father — the villainous, power-crazed Thanos (Josh Brolin) — will unite the heroes of the Marvel universe, including the Guardians, in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 5th.
