Kevin Smith Returns to the View Askewniverse with JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT
Kevin Smith, the filmmaker behind Clerks and Mallrats, is returning to the View Askewniverse. After stepping away from Hollywood and the View Askewniverse — an inter-connected series of films set in the same universe, like The Avengers but with more weed and dick jokes — Smith is reviving Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), the pair of perennially-stoned, drug-dealing troublemakers who first popped up in Clerks and have since made joint appearances through Smith’s View Askewniverse filmography.
Red State, Tusk and Yoga Hosers saw a return to independence for Smith following Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Cop Out, and with the long gestating Clerks III apparently cancelled — in a new Instagram post, Smith says it “can’t happen” due to one of the four leads opting out — Smith has announced Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, described by Smith as “a fun flick in which the Jersey boys have to go back to Hollywood to stop a brand new reboot of the old ‘Bluntman & Chronic Movie’ they hated so much.”
A followup to 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the film will be a “tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business’s recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces.” Miramax is “into” the idea, says Smith, adding he hopes to shoot the film this summer.
