JOHN WICK Director to Shoot DEADPOOL 2
David Leitch – co-director of the best Keanu Reeves movie to also feature puppy murder, John Wick – will next shoot Deadpool 2 (a total pun, because Wick and Deadpool both like shooting things), THR confirms. Leitch, who didn’t return to helm John Wick: Chapter 2 (out in February), replaces Deadpool director Tim Miller, who exited the high profile project last month over creative differences.
Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), and Magnus Martens (Netflix’s Luke Cage) all reportedly comprised Fox’s interview list, with Leitch ultimately winning out after a meeting with star and producer Ryan Reynolds. The John Wick co-director, who has a storied history as a stunt coordinator, will undoubtedly deliver on the action end of things – John Wick is among the rare few worthwhile action movies of the past two decades, with action that’s kinetic, fun, and actually concise and easy to follow – and with the approval of both Reynolds and studio Fox, there must be confidence the director can handle the humor of a character like Deadpool (obviously one of the bigger hallmarks of the first film, which grossed nearly $800 million worldwide). THR also notes Fox is already eyeing up Deadpool 3, probably if only to make jokes about Jaws 3 and Aliens 3.
“All I can really add is that I’m sad to see him off the film,” Reynolds shared with GQ of Miller’s unexpected departure. “Tim’s brilliant and nobody worked harder on Deadpool than he did.” Deadpool 2 hits January 12th, 2018.
