Idris Elba will direct “Yardie”
Reportedly, Idris Elba is set to direct an adaptation of Victor Headley’s novel Yardie. This news is surprising considering that Elba has starred in three of this year’s biggest hits: Zootopia, Finding Dory, and The Jungle Book. As if that were not enough, he is portraying the primary antagonist in Star Trek Beyond, which debuts on June 22nd. If you are a hard-core fan of Elba’s acting, then rest assured that he stars in the following films next year: The Dark Tower, Thor: Ragnarok, and The Mountain Between Us.
As for Yardie, the screenplay was penned by Brock Norman Brock (Bronson). The novel of the same name revolves around the following:
D, a courier carrying cocaine from Jamaica to London, decides to go it alone and disappears into the mean streets of Hackney carrying a kilo of white powder that his erstwhile friends are anxious to recover. But D’s treachery will never be forgotten – or forgiven.
It will be interesting to see whether Elba can make the transition from actor to director. Some actors, such as Ben Affleck, drastically improve their efforts after directing their own projects (i.e. Argo, The Town). Others, such as George Clooney, produce mixed results: both Leatherheads and The Monuments Men are full of talented actors yet dull, whereas The Ides of March and Good Night, and Good Luck are both excellent films. Whether or not Elba can make this transition remains to be seen.
Are you looking forward to seeing Elba’s directorial debut?
