Disney Confirms STAR WARS Land for 2019
Last January, we reported Disneyland was making room for the Star Wars themed land Disney officially announced at D23 Expo 2015. The Happiest Place on Earth broke ground on Star Wars land in April 2016, followed by a deeper look at the 14-acre land last summer. Now, during a quarterly investor earnings call on Tuesday, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the massive Star Wars area will officially open in 2019. Though an exact date has yet to be unveiled, 2019 will see the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode IX.
Rogue One, the first Star Wars standalone film, helped push Disney to their biggest box office year ever. Disneyland in Anaheim, California isn’t the only Disney theme park to undergo a major expansion — Pandora: World of Avatar, based on James Cameron’s Avatar saga, opens at Walt Disney World in May. Disneyland’s immersive Star Wars themed area will feature a life size Millennium Falcon, themed stores and restaurants (complete with in-character cast members, meaning unique alien inhabitants serving your giant-sized turkey leg), and exhilarating new Star Wars thrill rides.
“Our intent is to make it feel as if you’ve just walked into one of the movies,” said Imagineering executive Scott Trowbridge. “Bringing Star Wars to life in the physical world gives us the opportunity to play with a whole bunch of things we’ve never done before, to really engage all of the senses.”
