“Challenging” NATIONAL TREASURE 3 Still Being Worked On, Says Nic Cage

In March, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed “time and some resources” have been spent on development of a third National Treasure film, with the potential threequel likely finding Nic Cage reprising the role of Ben Gates, a historian who has twice embarked on adventures concerning America’s greatest historical treasures. While Cage said he’s “not relying on [National Treasure] to happen again,” the actor most recently shared a brief update with EW:

“I haven’t really heard anything about that,” Cage says of a potential sequel. “I do know that those scripts are very difficult to write, because there has to be some credibility in terms of the facts and fact-checking, because it was relying on historical events. And then you have to make it entertaining. I know that it’s been a challenge to get the script where it needs to be. That’s as much as I’ve heard. But they’re still working on it.”

National Treasure
Cage has famously faced money problems in the past, making it possibly he comes aboard when – or if – a script for a third outing gets figured out. The two National Treasure films were fun, Indiana Jones-esque action flicks that dealt with real life history (however loosely), and a third installment would be welcome even more than ten years after the second film, 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets. (I still want a resolution to that Page 47 tease). “We’re working on another National Treasure,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer said in 2014. “We just had a meeting on Friday with the writers and the director, so hopefully that will come together.”
