Armie Hammer: “No One Has Ever Come to Me” About GREEN LANTERN or SHAZAM
The Social Network and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. star Armie Hammer says there was never anything to the months-long rumors that he’s in the running for a role in Green Lantern Corps or Shazam.
While promoting Cars 3 (where he lends his voice to overconfident race car Jackson Storm), actor Armie Hammer told CinemaBlend that he’s never been approached to play Green Lantern or Shazam in Warner Brothers’ DC Cinematic Universe. After Dwayne Johnson (who has been attached to play Shazam’s archfoe Black Adam for a decade) pointed to Hammer as a possible choice to play clean cut superhero Shazam, speculation has run rampart for months — with the actor even being rumored to play the new Green Lantern, with speculation arising from supposedly noteworthy Twitter activity.
Fans took notice when head of DC Films Geoff Johns and Justice League director Zack Snyder followed Hammer on Twitter, with most of the Justice League — Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) — doing the same. Hammer gave fans plenty of reasons to think something was up: Hammer egged on the rumors, even posing with Joe Manganiello who, at the time, was slated to portray deadly assassin Deathstroke in The Batman.
“Dude, so Dwayne said that thing and literally blew up my social media. I couldn’t even open my Instagram. I thought my phone was gonna melt,” Hammer told CinemaBlend, laying Shazam speculation to rest. “But other than that, no one’s said anything. Yeah… I’m keeping my options open.”
Similarly, he said in a new interview with ScreenRant, “What an embarrassment of riches to have all of these choices. The funny thing is, is nobody has ever come to me an been like… My agent has never called and said, ‘Armie, Warner Bros, has been talking to me. They’re really interested in you. This whole thing.’ Never,” Hammer said, before putting an end to those Green Lantern rumors.
“In fact, after… there was like a… When the Green Lantern stuff first kind of started, which I think is Geoff Johns fault, because he like followed me on Twitter or something, and everybody was like, what does that mean?! So uh… how did it happen, um, I called my agent, after it had been going on for like a week or two, it had been going on for a little bit, I called my agent, I was like, ‘Man, have you heard anything from like DC or anything?’ And he was like, ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Nothing?’ He was like, ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Not one thing?’, and he was like, ‘No. Why?’ I was like, ‘Nothing about… Green Lantern?’, and he was like, ‘No, nothing,’ and I was like, alright. That’s it, that’s the end of it.”
Shazam has a tentative April 5th, 2019 release, while Green Lantern Corps is supposed to bow July 24th, 2020.
