Ariana Grande Will Star in NBC’s “Hairspray Live”
Ariana Grande is set to portray Penny Pringleton, the protagonist’s best friend, in NBC’s Hairspray Live. As a pop star, she is best-known for the following songs: “Dangerous Woman,” “Focus,” and “Problem.” Her performance in this live musical will not be her debut as an actress. In fact, Grande starred in episodes of Victorious and Underdogs, an animated film which is scheduled to debut on July 19th.
Grande will co-star in Hairspray Live alongside Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Kristen Chenoweth, Martin Short, Derek Hough, and Maddie Baillio.
Chairman of NBC Entertainment, Robert Greenblatt had the following to say regarding this casting news:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to round out our all-star ‘Hairspray Live!’ cast with Ariana Grande, one of the biggest recording artists in the world. She’s also a Broadway baby at heart, having debuted on Broadway when she was 15, and will be fantastic in the delightful role of Penny Pingleton. We look forward to her millions of fans seeing yet another side to this multifaceted performer and we welcome her to this incredible ensemble of artists.”
Hairspray Live is based on the Broadway musical of the same name. It is worth noting that this musical was inspired by the 1988 feature film, Hairspray. The 2007 feature film, Hairspray, on the other hand, is inspired by the musical and the 1988 feature film. This film, which starred John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, and Michelle Pfeiffer, ultimately grossed $202 million worldwide.
NBC’s Hairspray Live will air in December.
